SUPERNOVA 2013eb IN UGC 9761 = PSN J15111485+4609115
F. Ciabattari, E. Mazzoni, S. Donati, M. Rossi, G. Petroni, and L.
Pierotti, Borgo a Mozzano, Italy, report the discovery of an apparent
supernova (mag 17.8) on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag 19.5) obtained
on
July 13.91 and 14.84 UT with a 0.5-m Newtonian telescope in the course of
the
Italian Supernovae Search Project; the new object is located at R.A. =
15h11m14s.85, Decl. = +46d09'11".5 (equinox 2000.0; astrometry with respect
to UCAC-2 stars), which is 15" east and 8" north of the center of the
galaxy
UGC 9761. Nothing is visible at this position on digitized plates of the
Palomar Sky Survey (E plate from 1953 Mar. 15, limiting magnitude 20.1; and
J plate from 1994 Apr. 15, limiting magnitude 20.3). The variable was
designated PSN J15111485+4609115 when it was posted at the Central Bureau's
TOCP webpage and is here designated SN 2013eb based on the spectroscopic
confirmation reported below. Additional unfiltered CCD magnitudes for
2013eb:
2013 June 16, [19.2 (Ciabattari); July 15.848, 17.1 (Gianluca Masi and
Francesca Nocentini, remotely using the 43-cm robotic telescope at Ceccano,
Italy; position end figures 14s.73, 10".4); 15.929, 17.5 (Federica Luppi and
Luca Buzzi, 0.36-m f/7.1 reflector, Varese, Italy; position end figures
14s.72, 10".7; reference stars from CMC-14 catalogue; image posted at
website

D. D. Balam, Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, National Research
Council of Canada; M. L. Graham, Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope,
University of California at Santa Barbara; and E. Y. Hsiao, Las Campanas
Observatory, report that a spectrogram (range 369-700 nm, resolution 0.3 nm)
of PSN J15111485+4609115 = SN 2013eb, obtained on July 15.31 UT with the
1.82-m Plaskett Telescope of the National Research Council of Canada, shows
it to be a type-Ia supernova at one week after maximum light. Cross-
correlation with a library of supernova spectra using the "Supernova
Identification" code (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) indicates
that
2013eb is most similar to the type-Ia supernova 2004eo at seven days after
maximum light.

L. Tomasella, P. Ochner, A. Pastorello, S. Benetti, E. Cappellaro, M.
Turatto, and J. Farinato, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, Istituto
Nazionale di Astrofisica, report that an optical spectrogram of PSN
J15111485+4609115 = SN 2013eb (range 340-820 nm; resolution 1.3 nm),
obtained
on July 18.92 UT with the Asiago 1.82-m Copernico Telescope (+ AFOSC), shows
that this is a type-Ia supernova at redshift z = 0.018606 (Falco et al.
1999,
PASP 111, 438; via NED). A good match is found with several normal type-Ia
supernovae at about three weeks after maximum light. The expansion velocity,
deduced from the Si II 635.5-nm absorption, is about 10500 km/s. The Asiago
classification spectra are posted at website URL
http://sngroup.oapd.inaf.it;
classification was made via GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383)
and SNID (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024).
